COLUMBUS — The Columbus Blue Jackets return to Nationwide Arena tonight looking to rebound from a frustrating loss to St. Louis, but standing in their way is a Florida Panthers team that has developed a reputation for being one of the NHL's toughest opponents.
The Blue Jackets enter the matchup with a 2-2-0 record after dropping a 5-3 decision to the Blues on Saturday. Columbus appeared to be in control after building a 2-0 first-period lead, but St. Louis responded with three consecutive goals and eventually pulled away in the third.
It was a disappointing performance for a team still adjusting to head coach Rick Bowness and several offseason additions.
Florida, meanwhile, arrives in Columbus with its own problems. The Panthers have lost two consecutive games, including Monday's 5-3 defeat against Buffalo, and will be playing their second game in as many nights.
With injuries also taking a toll on their lineup, the Blue Jackets have an opportunity to take advantage of a difficult situation for the visitors.
Columbus Needs a Complete Performance
The biggest concern for the Blue Jackets through four games has been their inability to maintain consistent play throughout an entire contest.
Saturday's loss provided another example.
Columbus outshot St. Louis 10-4 in the opening period and carried a two-goal advantage into the second. However, the Blues took control of the game, outscoring the Blue Jackets 3-0 in the middle period before eventually securing the victory.
Columbus managed just 13 shots over the final 40 minutes, a dramatic reversal from its promising start.
Bowness was understandably frustrated with his team's mental mistakes and declining intensity.
The Blue Jackets have demonstrated that they can compete with talented opponents, including a 3-2 shootout victory over Pittsburgh on Friday. However, allowing opponents to take control for extended stretches has been an early concern.
Against Florida, Columbus will need to establish its forecheck, avoid unnecessary turnovers, and maintain defensive discipline throughout all three periods.
Florida Is Dealing With Significant Injuries
The Panthers remain a talented team, but their lineup looks considerably different without two of their most important forwards.
Captain Aleksander Barkov is sidelined with a lower-body injury and is expected to miss six to eight weeks after getting hurt against San Jose on October 1. Veteran Brad Marchand is also unavailable after suffering a lower-body injury against Los Angeles on October 6.
Marchand is expected to miss approximately six weeks, leaving Florida without two established offensive contributors.
Their absences have forced head coach Paul Maurice to make adjustments throughout the lineup, with other forwards taking on additional responsibilities.
The Panthers still have plenty of offensive talent, including Sam Reinhart, Matthew Tkachuk, and Carter Verhaeghe. Reinhart scored twice on the power play against Buffalo on Monday, demonstrating that Florida remains dangerous even without its injured stars.
Columbus cannot afford to assume that Florida's injuries will make tonight's game easy. However, facing a short-handed team playing on consecutive nights presents an opportunity the Blue Jackets should be eager to exploit.
The Blue Jackets' Defense Remains a Work in Progress
Columbus received a welcome boost Friday when Damon Severson returned from shoulder surgery and immediately contributed a goal and an assist against Pittsburgh.
His return has helped stabilize the defensive group, but the Blue Jackets remain without Ivan Provorov and Dante Fabbro, both of whom are dealing with injuries.
That has forced Bowness to rely on several different defensive combinations while the team attempts to develop chemistry.
Zach Werenski continues to anchor the blue line, and Severson's return provides another experienced presence capable of handling significant responsibilities.
However, the defensive breakdowns that contributed to Saturday's loss cannot continue, particularly against a Florida team that has demonstrated an ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Columbus needs better communication, more consistent puck management, and stronger support in front of its goaltender.
Special Teams Could Make the Difference
Florida's power play was responsible for two of its three goals against Buffalo on Monday, with Reinhart scoring twice while the Panthers had the man advantage.
That should serve as a warning for Columbus.
The Blue Jackets have experienced some early-season inconsistencies, and special teams are another area where they need dependable execution. While Columbus has shown the ability to generate scoring opportunities at even strength, taking advantage of power plays and avoiding unnecessary penalties could make a significant difference in a close game.
Against a team with Florida's experience, giving opponents repeated opportunities with the extra skater is rarely a good idea.
Columbus needs to remain disciplined defensively while finding ways to create dangerous scoring opportunities when it has the man advantage.
Prediction
The Blue Jackets have been inconsistent through their first four games, but tonight presents a favorable opportunity to get back above .500.
Florida remains dangerous despite its injuries, but the Panthers are playing their second game in two nights and are missing two important offensive contributors.
If Columbus can avoid the defensive mistakes that plagued Saturday's loss and establish its forecheck early, the Blue Jackets should have an opportunity to control the game.
Prediction: Blue Jackets 4, Panthers 2
