CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers will begin the 2026-27 NBA season without forward Nae'Qwan Tomlin, who has been diagnosed with a lower-back stress reaction.
The Cavaliers announced Tuesday that an MRI performed at Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine confirmed the injury. Tomlin will be reevaluated in approximately three to four weeks, but the team has not established a timetable for his return to basketball activities.
The announcement provides some clarity after Tomlin missed all three of Cleveland's preseason games because of what had previously been described as back tightness. He also did not participate in Monday's practice.
A Setback for Cleveland's Depth
Tomlin was hoping to build on a season in which he established himself as a contributor after working his way into the organization as an undrafted free agent in 2024.
The 25-year-old forward appeared in 64 games for Cleveland last season, averaging 5.8 points and 2.9 rebounds. His energy and athleticism gave coach Kenny Atkinson another option off the bench.
Tomlin initially joined the Cavaliers through their Summer League program and spent time with the Cleveland Charge before earning opportunities with the NBA team. In February 2026, Cleveland rewarded his progress by converting his two-way contract into a standard NBA deal.
The injury interrupts that progress just as the Cavaliers prepare to begin another season with championship expectations.
Although Tomlin wasn't guaranteed a regular spot in the rotation, his absence leaves Cleveland with one fewer option in the frontcourt. It also means other reserves could receive additional opportunities while he recovers.
No Return Date Yet
Although Tomlin is scheduled to be reevaluated in three to four weeks, that doesn't mean he'll automatically be ready to play at that point.
The Cavaliers will determine the next steps in his recovery after evaluating his progress.
For now, Tomlin faces an extended absence at a time when he was hoping to build on his role from last season.
Cleveland will have to begin its regular-season schedule without him, with the hope that he can return and contribute once he's healthy.
What's Next
Cleveland opens its regular season Thursday, October 22, against the Philadelphia 76ers at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
