CINCINNATI — Cincinnati opened the 2026 season with exactly the type of performance Scott Satterfield was hoping to see.
The Bearcats controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the football Saturday afternoon at historic Nippert Stadium, defeating Boston College 34-15 behind a relentless rushing attack and an aggressive defense that repeatedly put the Eagles behind the chains. Cincinnati rushed for 254 yards, forced two turnovers and recorded four sacks while extending the nation's second-longest home-opening winning streak to 25 games.
It wasn't always flashy offensively, but it was efficient.
Making his Cincinnati debut after transferring from Georgia Southern, quarterback JC French IV threw for just 77 yards on 10-of-14 passing, but he more than made up for it with his legs. French rushed for 52 yards and three touchdowns while adding a touchdown pass to JV Gibson, accounting for all four of Cincinnati's offensive touchdowns.
The Bearcats broke through midway through the second quarter after keeping the Eagles off the scoreboard early. Following a successful fake punt where Malachi Henry found punter Max Fletcher on a pass that extended the drive, French connected with Gibson for a touchdown to give Cincinnati a 10-0 halftime lead.
Any thoughts of a Boston College comeback disappeared quickly after halftime.
Cincinnati opened the third quarter with a methodical nine-play drive capped by a four-yard touchdown run from French. On the Eagles' ensuing possession, cornerback Jacob Finley recovered a fumble, setting up another short field. French punched in his second four-yard rushing touchdown of the quarter to stretch the lead to 24-0 before Boston College finally answered late in the period.
While French finished the drives, Gi'Bran Payne was the engine that kept the offense moving. The Notre Dame transfer rushed for a game-high 108 yards on 14 carries, leading a Cincinnati ground game that wore down the Eagles as the afternoon progressed.
Defensively, the Bearcats may have been even more impressive.
New defensive coordinator Nate Woody's 3-4 scheme consistently pressured Boston College quarterback Mason McKenzie, producing four sacks, numerous quarterback pressures and two takeaways. The Eagles managed just 15 points after trailing 24-0, with much of their production coming during garbage time.
It wasn't a perfect performance, but season openers rarely are. What Cincinnati showed was physicality, depth and a defense that looks capable of creating problems for opposing offenses all season. If Saturday was any indication, the Bearcats have plenty to work with as the season goes on.
What's Next: Cincinnati (1-0) is back at Nippert Stadium next Saturday to host Western Carolina before the schedule stiffens with a trip to Nebraska.
