CINCINNATI — After opening the season with a 34-15 victory over Boston College, Cincinnati returns to Historic Nippert Stadium on Saturday night with an opportunity to improve to 2-0.
The Bearcats enter as 36.5-point favorites against Western Carolina, but games such as this come with their own challenge. Cincinnati must avoid looking ahead to next week’s rivalry matchup against Miami and take care of business against a Catamounts team capable of moving the ball through the air.
UC established its identity quickly against Boston College, rushing for 254 yards behind an offensive line that earned Big 12 Offensive Line of the Week honors. Gi’Bran Payne led the ground game with a career-high 108 yards on 14 carries, while quarterback JC French IV added 52 yards and three touchdowns. French accounted for all four Cincinnati touchdowns in his Bearcats debut, throwing one and running for three, becoming the first UC quarterback to score three rushing touchdowns in a game since Desmond Ridder.
The new-look Cincinnati defense also made a promising debut under coordinator Nate Woody. The Bearcats held Boston College scoreless in the first half, recorded seven tackles for loss and forced two turnovers. Safety MJ Cannon created both, intercepting a pass and forcing a fumble during his first start for Cincinnati.
Western Carolina enters at 1-1 after opening the season with a 45-21 victory over Eastern Kentucky before falling 28-19 at Campbell. The Catamounts have leaned heavily on quarterback Lex Thomas, who has completed 52 of 79 passes for 646 yards and five touchdowns through two games.
Wide receiver AJ Colombo leads Western Carolina with 181 receiving yards, while Jai Boyd caught two touchdown passes against Campbell. If the Catamounts are going to make Cincinnati uncomfortable, it will likely happen through their passing game. Running the football has been another story. Western Carolina managed only one net rushing yard against Campbell, placing even more pressure on Thomas and the passing attack. That imbalance could allow Woody’s defense to attack aggressively and create opportunities for another disruptive performance.
Players to Watch
- JC French IV — French’s Cincinnati debut could hardly have gone better, but Saturday presents an opportunity to continue developing chemistry within the offense. The Bearcats should not need him to carry the team, but another efficient performance would help build momentum before the schedule becomes more difficult. And while he was potent on the ground, he does need to prove himself as a passer because UC will need him to make plays with his arm at some point this season.
- Gi’Bran Payne — Payne emerged from Cincinnati’s crowded backfield with the first 100-yard game of his career. Western Carolina’s defense will now have to contend with Payne and a deep group of Bearcats running behind an offensive line that controlled the opener.
- MJ Cannon — Cannon immediately became a playmaker in Woody’s defense by contributing to both Cincinnati takeaways against Boston College. Western Carolina will put the ball in the air frequently, giving Cannon another chance to make his presence felt in the secondary.

Prediction
Western Carolina’s passing attack may test Cincinnati’s secondary and produce a few explosive plays, but the matchup along the line of scrimmage will be where the game is decided. UC should control the game with its rushing attack, pressure Thomas and begin looking toward rivalry week sometime during the second half.
Cincinnati 55, Western Carolina 10
