COLUMBUS — The Columbus Blue Jackets return home Tuesday night to face the Toronto Maple Leafs, hoping to find some offense after a pair of low-scoring games over the weekend.
Columbus managed a 1-0 overtime victory against the New York Rangers on Saturday before falling 2-1 at Minnesota on Sunday. The Blue Jackets have scored just twice in their last two outings, putting additional pressure on their defense and goaltending.
The loss to Minnesota was particularly frustrating. Adam Fantilli scored late in the first period to tie the game, but Kirill Kaprizov's second-period power-play goal proved to be the difference.
Now Columbus gets an opportunity to bounce back against a Toronto team playing its second game in as many nights.
Finding More Offense
The Blue Jackets have struggled to generate goals consistently in the early weeks of the season. While the goaltending has given Columbus a chance to win its last two games, the offense hasn't done nearly enough.
Against Minnesota, the Blue Jackets managed just 14 shots on goal, while Cam Talbot made 32 saves. Columbus spent much of the evening defending rather than creating scoring opportunities.
Fantilli has already shown he can make an impact, and Columbus will need more contributions from its other offensive threats. Kent Johnson, who scored the overtime winner against New York, and Zach Werenski, who helped set up that goal, could play important roles in generating more chances.
Special teams could also make a difference. Columbus surrendered the winning goal on a Minnesota power play Sunday, and avoiding unnecessary penalties against Toronto would be a good place to start.
The Maple Leafs arrive following a 3-1 victory over San Jose on Monday that ended a three-game losing streak. Auston Matthews recorded a goal and two assists, while rookie Gavin McKenna scored the go-ahead goal in the third period.
For Columbus, getting off to a strong start and keeping pressure on Toronto's defense would be a welcome change.
The Maple Leafs will be playing on consecutive nights, while Columbus had Monday off after returning from Minnesota. The Blue Jackets should look to take advantage of that difference in rest.
A victory would give Columbus some momentum before continuing its home schedule. But to get it, the Blue Jackets need to spend more time attacking and less time relying on their goaltenders to keep them in games.

Prediction:
Columbus has struggled to produce much offense lately, but returning home to face a Toronto team playing its second game in as many nights should help. If the Blue Jackets can generate more shots and stay out of the penalty box, I think they'll get back on track with a much-needed home victory.
Columbus 4, Toronto 2
