CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bearcats have made another addition to their men's basketball roster just days before the start of the regular season, announcing Monday that former Akron forward Amani Lyles has joined the program for the 2026–27 season.
The 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward spent four seasons at Akron, developing into one of the Mid-American Conference's top players. He earned First Team All-MAC honors last season after averaging 14.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.
Lyles started all 35 games for the Zips, shooting 55.8 percent from the field and 37.3 percent from three-point range. His ability to score inside and knock down outside shots could provide another offensive option for first-year Cincinnati head coach Jerrod Calhoun.
The Columbus native, who attended Beechcroft High School, also brings postseason experience. He scored 26 points against Texas Tech in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament and earned All-MAC Tournament Team honors.
Lyles joins a Cincinnati program that has undergone significant roster change under Calhoun. He will also reunite with former Akron teammate Eric Mahaffey, giving him a familiar face as he adjusts to his new surroundings.
However, there is an important question surrounding his availability. Lyles has already played four college seasons and is among the athletes challenging NCAA eligibility restrictions that could prevent them from competing for a fifth year.
Cincinnati announced that Lyles will begin participating in team activities but said the university will continue monitoring his eligibility status. His addition to the roster does not guarantee that he will be cleared to play when the regular season begins.
The Bearcats have one final exhibition against Oakland on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Arena before opening the regular season November 2 against American University.
