CINCINNATI — The Columbus Crew take a 1-0 lead into halftime of Sunday's Hell is Real derby at TQL Stadium, with Gonzalo Tapia's first-half header separating the two Ohio rivals.
Columbus took advantage of a corner kick while FC Cincinnati was temporarily playing with 10 men. Defender Tyrell Malacia was off the pitch dealing with an injury when Tapia headed home the opening goal, leaving the Orange and Blue trailing their biggest rival.
For Cincinnati, the goal was another example of a problem that has followed the club throughout the season. Defending headers, particularly on set pieces, has repeatedly cost FC Cincinnati, and Sunday's opening goal continued that frustrating trend.
The Crew now have 45 minutes to protect their advantage and secure a valuable road victory. Columbus has made the most of its opportunities despite Cincinnati generating more shots during the opening half.
For FC Cincinnati, the second half offers an opportunity to recover from another defensive lapse. The Orange and Blue have already dealt with an injury to Julian Malatini, who was replaced by Nick Hagglund in the 18th minute, and will need to find an equalizer while preventing Columbus from adding to its lead.
