CHICAGO — One night after being overwhelmed by the Chicago Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds responded in emphatic fashion.

Hector Rodríguez, Dane Myers, Tyler Stephenson and Sal Stewart all homered as Cincinnati defeated the Cubs 7-5 on Sunday night at Wrigley Field, securing a series victory and ending a lengthy road trip on a high note.

Chicago grabbed the early momentum behind Pete Crow-Armstrong, who launched a leadoff home run in the first inning before adding another blast later in the game. The Cubs built a 2-0 lead through two innings, but the Reds never allowed the deficit to snowball.

Cincinnati broke through in the fourth when Rodríguez crushed a three-run homer to right field, giving the Reds their first lead of the night. Myers added a solo shot in the fifth before Stephenson followed later in the inning with a two-run blast to extend the advantage to 6-3. Sal Stewart continued his torrid stretch in the seventh, belting his third home run in as many games to provide valuable insurance.

The offensive outburst backed another strong performance from rookie Chase Burns. Despite surrendering two home runs to Crow-Armstrong, Burns settled in to work 5? innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out six to earn his 15th victory of the season. The Reds' bullpen preserved the lead over the final 3? innings before Emilio Pagán recorded the final three outs for his 19th save.

Perhaps the most encouraging sign for Cincinnati was the continued emergence of its young core. Stewart's home run capped a remarkable series in which the rookie went deep in all three games, while Rodríguez continued his recent surge with the pivotal three-run shot. Combined with another quality outing from Burns, the Reds left Chicago with momentum after taking two of three from a Cubs club firmly in the National League playoff race.

The only concern came in the fifth inning when Elly De La Cruz exited the game with right quad tightness after running out a ground ball. Reds manager Terry Francona expressed optimism afterward that the injury was not serious.
