CINCINNATI — José Treviño delivered a two-run single during a three-run sixth inning as the Cincinnati Reds rallied for a 6-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs Friday night at Great American Ball Park.
Cincinnati immediately pressured Cubs starter Clay Holmes. Carlos Jorge opened the bottom of the first with a triple before Elly De La Cruz drew a walk. Sal Stewart brought Jorge home with a sacrifice fly, and Tyler Stephenson followed with an infield single that scored De La Cruz.
Chicago cut Cincinnati’s lead in half when Carson Kelly singled home Nico Hoerner in the second. Ian Happ then tied the game with a solo home run off Chase Burns in the third.
The Reds moved back in front during the bottom half of the inning. Jorge scored for the second time when Stewart grounded into a double play, giving Cincinnati a 3-2 advantage.
That lead did not last long.
Kelly and Dansby Swanson scored on Seiya Suzuki’s two-run single in the fourth, putting Chicago ahead 4-3.
Cincinnati finally reclaimed control in the sixth. De La Cruz scored his second run when Eugenio Suárez singled into left field, tying the game. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Treviño lined a two-run single into right, scoring JJ Bleday and Suárez to give the Reds a 6-4 lead.
De La Cruz reached base in all four of his plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs. Jorge reached twice and also scored two runs, while Treviño drove in a team-high two.
Burns allowed two runs on four hits over three innings in his final home start of the season. He struck out four and walked two.
Julian Aguiar followed with three innings, allowing two runs—one earned—on four hits to receive the win. Brock Burke and Tejay Antone each pitched a scoreless inning before Emilio Pagán retired Chicago in the ninth to earn the save.
