CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bearcats entered Saturday's matchup against No. 8 Texas Tech as heavy underdogs, but they've turned Homecoming into a nightmare for the undefeated Red Raiders.
Cincinnati has scored three second-quarter touchdowns, including two in the final 1:37, while its defense has kept one of the Big 12's most dangerous offenses out of the end zone.
The Bearcats jumped ahead early after Antwan Peek Jr. recovered a fumble by Texas Tech quarterback Will Hammond. The turnover gave Cincinnati possession at the Red Raiders' 48-yard line, and Stephen Rusnak eventually connected on a 47-yard field goal to give UC a 3-0 lead.
Texas Tech responded with two field goals from Stone Harrington, connecting from 32 and 48 yards to take a 6-3 lead late in the first quarter. However, Cincinnati's defense prevented the Red Raiders from reaching the end zone, including a first-quarter possession in which Texas Tech reached the five-yard line before an intentional-grounding penalty forced it backward.
The Bearcats took control in the second quarter, putting together a 10-play, 85-yard drive that ended with French finding Cole Tabb for a four-yard touchdown pass. The score gave Cincinnati a 10-6 advantage with 7:48 remaining before halftime.
Cincinnati's defense followed with another stop, highlighted by a 10-yard sack of Hammond by edge rusher Patrick Bauer. The Bearcats then marched 55 yards on 11 plays, with French converting a critical fourth-down opportunity on a seven-yard run before finding Malachi Henry for a five-yard touchdown with 1:37 remaining.
The biggest fireworks were still to come.
Texas Tech attempted to respond before halftime, but safety MJ Cannon made a spectacular one-handed interception of Hammond's pass at the Cincinnati 25-yard line with 31 seconds remaining.
On Cincinnati's first play following the turnover, Tabb broke loose for a 51-yard run to the Texas Tech 24. After an incomplete pass, French scrambled for 22 yards to the two-yard line. Another incompletion followed before French found Liam Waters for a two-yard touchdown with just four seconds remaining.
The stunning sequence extended Cincinnati's lead to 23-6, pending the extra point, and capped an extraordinary second quarter in which the Bearcats repeatedly took advantage of Texas Tech mistakes.
For Cincinnati, the biggest surprise has been its defense. After allowing 1,120 yards over its previous two games, the Bearcats have kept one of the Big 12's top offenses out of the end zone while forcing two turnovers and producing several important stops.
The Bearcats entered Saturday trying to snap a two-game losing streak, and their first-half performance has given the Homecoming crowd plenty of reason for excitement. However, Cincinnati will need to maintain its defensive intensity against a Texas Tech team capable of scoring quickly.
