OKLAHOMA CITY — The Cleveland Cavaliers are struggling to keep pace with the Oklahoma City Thunder, trailing 60-44 at halftime Wednesday night at Paycom Center. Cleveland fell behind early and has been unable to establish a consistent offensive rhythm against the defending Western Conference champions.
Oklahoma City jumped out to a 37-20 lead after the first quarter, taking advantage of Cleveland's missed shots and turnovers to build a double-digit advantage. The Cavaliers had difficulty finding scoring opportunities and struggled to contain the Thunder's balanced offensive attack.
The Thunder received 10 first-half points apiece from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Kenrich Williams, Ajay Mitchell, and Bennett Stirtz. Gilgeous-Alexander also contributed six assists, helping Oklahoma City maintain its lead despite scoring just two points in the second quarter.
Cleveland showed some improvement in the second period, outscoring Oklahoma City 24-23. James Harden scored nine points, including two three-pointers and three free throws after drawing a shooting foul, while Evan Mobley contributed seven points and two blocked shots.
Donovan Mitchell has struggled to find his shooting touch, managing just six points through two quarters. The Cavaliers have also had difficulty generating consistent offense from their supporting players, leaving them facing a sizable deficit entering the second half.
Cleveland will need a much stronger offensive effort after halftime while tightening its defense to have a chance at overcoming the 16-point deficit. The Cavaliers are looking to avenge Monday's 117-112 loss to Oklahoma City, but the Thunder have controlled much of Wednesday's rematch.
