CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers have some work to do in the second half Monday night, trailing the undefeated Minnesota Timberwolves 60-50 at halftime at Rocket Arena.
Minnesota controlled much of the opening half, taking a 31-24 lead after the first quarter and extending its advantage to as many as 15 points in the second. Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves with 20 points, repeatedly finding room on the inside and from midrange.
Cleveland struggled to establish a consistent offensive rhythm against Minnesota's defense. Meleek Thomas led the Cavaliers with 10 points, while Donovan Mitchell connected on three three-pointers to help keep Cleveland within reach.
The Timberwolves also created problems around the basket, with Rudy Gobert very active on the offensive glass. Minnesota's defense made things difficult for Cleveland, blocking several shots and forcing the Cavaliers into contested attempts.
The Cavaliers showed some signs of life late in the second quarter after falling behind 54-39. Jaylon Tyson scored on consecutive possessions, and Sam Merrill connected on a three-pointer with 54 seconds remaining to help Cleveland cut into the deficit.
Cleveland will need a much stronger defensive effort in the second half, particularly against Edwards and LaMelo Ball. The Cavaliers must also improve their rebounding and find more consistent scoring opportunities if they hope to hand Minnesota its first loss of the season.
