COLUMBUS — The Columbus Blue Jackets got a much-needed win Saturday night, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights, 2-1, in overtime at Nationwide Arena. After an up-and-down start to the season, Columbus received an outstanding performance from goaltender Cam Talbot and found a way to beat one of the Western Conference's better teams.
Adam Fantilli scored the winner just 59 seconds into overtime, blasting a power-play goal past Vegas goaltender Carter Hart. Charlie Coyle and Kent Johnson collected assists on the play, giving Columbus its fourth victory of the season and ending a two-game losing streak.
The Blue Jackets opened the scoring at 11:51 of the first period when defenseman Denton Mateychuk scored his second goal of the season. Johnson and Valeri Nichushkin assisted on the goal, giving Columbus an early advantage.
Vegas answered at 17:13 when Tomas Hertl scored his fifth goal of the season, with assists from Braeden Bowman and Trevor Connelly. Neither team would score again in regulation.
The second period featured opportunities at both ends, but Talbot and Hart kept the game tied. Columbus nearly took the lead in the final minute when Sean Monahan hit the left post with a snap shot, but the puck stayed out.
Vegas took control for much of the third period, outshooting Columbus 13-5. Talbot was outstanding, repeatedly turning away the Golden Knights and giving the Blue Jackets a chance to win despite spending much of the period under pressure.
The opportunity came when Vegas defenseman Shea Theodore was called for holding just 15 seconds into overtime. Columbus took advantage of the four-on-three power play, with Fantilli scoring 44 seconds later to send the home crowd into celebration.
Talbot finished with 26 saves on 27 shots, providing the steady goaltending Columbus desperately needed after allowing six goals in its previous game against Toronto.
The victory was an encouraging result for a Blue Jackets team still searching for consistency. Columbus entered Saturday at 3-5-0, with several strong performances mixed among frustrating losses. Against Vegas, the Blue Jackets still struggled to generate offense at times, but Talbot kept them in the game, and Fantilli delivered when the opportunity came.
Beating a Golden Knights team that entered the night with an 8-4-0 record is a positive step, particularly after the disappointing loss to Toronto earlier in the week. The Blue Jackets are now 4-5-0, although their inability to sustain offensive pressure remains a concern.
Columbus has plenty to improve as the season continues, but Saturday's win was a reminder that this team can compete with quality opponents. For a club looking to establish some consistency, it's a result worth building on.
