CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Guardians return to Progressive Field on Thursday with the American League Championship Series tied at one game apiece following Tuesday's frustrating 3-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
After rallying for a 7-3 victory in Monday's opener, Cleveland struggled offensively in Game 2, managing just one run against Freddy Peralta and the Tampa Bay bullpen. A fourth-inning error by José Ramírez proved particularly costly, allowing the Rays to score three unearned runs in what ultimately became the difference in the game.
Despite the loss, Cleveland accomplished something important by splitting the first two games on the road. The Guardians now have an opportunity to take control of the series with three consecutive games scheduled at Progressive Field.
Williams Expected to Start Game 3
Gavin Williams is expected to start Thursday's game for Cleveland, although manager Stephen Vogt has not officially confirmed the assignment.
Williams finished the regular season 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA and has been outstanding during the postseason. The right-hander recorded 24 strikeouts and a 1.54 ERA in 11? innings against Chicago during the ALDS.
Tampa Bay has announced Griffin Jax as its Game 3 starter. Jax finished the regular season 8-10 with a 3.53 ERA, although he pitched considerably better after joining the Rays' rotation late in the season.
The matchup could present another difficult challenge for Cleveland's inconsistent offense.
Cleveland Needs More From Its Lineup
The Guardians collected 14 hits in Monday's victory but struggled to generate scoring opportunities Tuesday, failing to capitalize on several chances with runners aboard.
Chase DeLauter has been one of Cleveland's most productive hitters in the series, collecting three hits, including a home run, in Game 1 before driving in the team's only run with a double Tuesday.
The Guardians will need more contributions throughout the lineup, particularly from their middle-of-the-order hitters, if they hope to take advantage of returning home.
Cleveland's pitching has generally been effective through the first two games. The bigger concern is whether the offense can produce consistently enough to support it.
Game 3 is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. ET, with Games 4 and 5 also set for Progressive Field.
After splitting the opening two games in Tampa Bay, the Guardians have put themselves in a favorable position. Now they'll need to capitalize on it.
