DALLAS — The Columbus Blue Jackets fell behind early Saturday night and couldn't complete a comeback, losing 3-1 to the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center. Dallas scored twice in the first period, while Columbus managed only a third-period goal from Damon Severson.
The Stars opened the scoring at 2:16 of the first period, taking advantage of an early power play after goaltender Jet Greaves was penalized for delay of game. Mikko Rantanen scored on a snap shot, with Wyatt Johnston and Jason Robertson collecting assists.
Columbus had chances to answer, including shots from Adam Fantilli, Zach Werenski, and Mathieu Olivier. However, the Blue Jackets couldn't beat Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger, and the Stars extended their advantage just before the first intermission.
Thomas Harley scored with one second remaining in the opening period, converting a chance assisted by Arttu Hyry and Miro Heiskanen. The goal sent Columbus into the locker room trailing 2-0 despite generating several scoring opportunities of their own.
Neither team scored in the second period, although both had chances on the power play. Dallas received a man advantage when Columbus was penalized for having too many men on the ice, while the Blue Jackets had an opportunity after Nils Lundkvist was called for hooking. Neither team converted.
Columbus finally broke through at 6:21 of the third period when Severson scored on a snap shot, assisted by Werenski and Kent Johnson. The goal cut Dallas' lead to 2-1 and gave the Blue Jackets nearly 14 minutes to find an equalizer.
The Blue Jackets continued looking for the tying goal, with Jake Christiansen and Conor Garland putting shots on net during the period. Columbus also generated attempts from Denton Mateychuk and Ivan Provorov, but Oettinger and the Dallas defense kept the Stars in front.
Dallas added an empty-net goal in the final second to complete the 3-1 victory. Columbus kept the Stars scoreless for the entire second period and most of the third, but the two first-period goals proved too much to overcome.
