PHILADELPHIA — The Columbus Blue Jackets finally got something positive to build on Saturday night. Now they'll try to turn one solid performance into consecutive victories when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.
Columbus enters the matchup with a 4-5-0 record following a 2-1 overtime victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. Adam Fantilli scored the winner on the power play, while Cam Talbot stopped 26 shots in one of the team's strongest defensive performances of the young season.
The victory was a welcome change after Columbus had struggled to keep opponents off the scoreboard. The Blue Jackets allowed six goals against Toronto in their previous outing and seven against Florida earlier in the month, making Saturday's disciplined defensive effort a welcome sight.
Head coach Rick Bowness has stressed the need for more consistent play, particularly when Columbus doesn't have the puck. Against Vegas, the Jackets did a much better job limiting scoring opportunities, and they'll need that same commitment against Philadelphia.
The Flyers enter Tuesday with a 3-7-3 record, although they've shown improvement recently. Philadelphia won three consecutive games against Ottawa, Colorado, and Buffalo before losing 5-4 to Anaheim on Saturday.
Matvei Michkov scored twice against the Ducks and has been one of Philadelphia's most dangerous offensive threats. The Flyers also have Trevor Zegras and Sean Couturier, but injuries have left them without several important players, including Travis Konecny and Owen Tippett.
Columbus has enjoyed considerable success against Philadelphia in recent seasons, winning five consecutive meetings. Three of those victories came in shootouts, suggesting another close contest could be ahead.
Kent Johnson will look to build on his two-assist performance against Vegas, while Fantilli hopes his overtime winner can provide some momentum. Matthew Knies is also scheduled to play his 250th NHL game, an early milestone in his first season with Columbus.
One area that needs continued improvement is the power play. Fantilli's winner against Vegas was a positive development for a unit that had struggled through the opening weeks, but Columbus needs to become more consistent when it has the man advantage.
The Blue Jackets have an opportunity to get back to .500 with a victory Tuesday. Against a Philadelphia team dealing with injuries and its own early-season struggles, Columbus needs another strong defensive performance and more production from its forwards.

Prediction
Columbus showed Saturday that it can win when it plays responsibly in its own end. Philadelphia has been competitive recently, but its injuries and the Blue Jackets' recent success in this matchup give Columbus an opportunity to come away with another victory. Even though the Blue Jackets are on away ice, I still think they get it done with a goal late.
Blue Jackets 3, Flyers 2
