CINCINNATI — One week after upsetting No. 8 Texas Tech, the Cincinnati Bearcats suffered a lopsided defeat Saturday afternoon, falling 49-25 to No. 6 Utah at Nippert Stadium. The Utes scored 42 first-half points, including two defensive touchdowns, to take control of the game before Cincinnati mounted a second-half response.
Utah scored on its opening possession when quarterback Devon Dampier connected with Hunter Andrews for a four-yard touchdown. Cincinnati answered with a Stephen Rusnak field goal, but the Utes responded with a 13-yard touchdown run from Wayshawn Parker to take a 14-3 lead after the first quarter.
The game quickly got away from Cincinnati in the second quarter. Running back Gi'Bran Payne lost a fumble that Utah's Rabbit Evans recovered and returned 51 yards for a touchdown. Daniel Bray later scored on a 30-yard run, extending the Utes' advantage to 28-3.
Cincinnati had opportunities to stay within reach but couldn't finish drives. A 63-yard completion from JC French IV to Malachi Henry moved the Bearcats inside Utah's 10-yard line, but two penalties and a sack pushed them backward before Rusnak missed a field-goal attempt.
The Bearcats eventually added another field goal, but Utah answered with a six-play, 90-yard touchdown drive that featured a 64-yard run by Parker and a three-yard touchdown pass from Dampier to Bray. Cincinnati's next possession ended when Elijah Davis intercepted French and returned the ball 39 yards for a touchdown, sending Utah into halftime with a 42-6 lead.
Cincinnati showed some heart after halftime, beginning with cornerback Jacob Finley intercepting Dampier and returning the ball for a touchdown in the third quarter. Cole Tabb later broke loose for a 48-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 42-19 after a failed two-point conversion.
Utah responded with another big play when Dampier connected with Andrews for a 59-yard touchdown on third down. The score extended the lead to 49-19 and prevented Cincinnati from building on its third-quarter momentum.
French added a two-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, although another failed two-point attempt left Cincinnati trailing 49-25. The Bearcats' defense later recovered a Utah fumble and stopped the Utes on fourth-and-goal, but Cincinnati was unable to score again.
The loss drops Cincinnati to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the Big 12, while Utah improves to 8-0 and 5-0 in conference play.
