CLEVELAND — If the Cleveland Guardians wanted to make an early statement in September, they couldn't have scripted a much better beginning.
Gavin Williams turned in the best performance of his young career Tuesday night, striking out a career-high 13 batters over seven dominant innings as the Guardians defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 at Progressive Field. Combined with three timely home runs, the victory strengthened Cleveland's grip on the American League's final wild-card position.
Williams was in complete command from the outset as the right-hander allowed just two hits and one walk while surrendering an unearned run. Toronto struggled to square up his fastball throughout the evening, and Williams consistently finished hitters with a sharp breaking ball, recording strikeout after strikeout as the Blue Jays' lineup failed to generate any sustained offense.
His lone blemish came in the sixth inning. After Patrick Bailey's throwing error allowed Kazuma Okamoto to advance to third base, a wild pitch brought home Toronto's only run of the night. The Blue Jays managed just two hits against Williams, who retired the final four batters he faced before handing the game over to the bullpen.
The Guardians' offense supplied all the support Williams would need.
Patrick Bailey broke a scoreless game in the fifth inning with a two-run home run to right field, giving Cleveland its first lead of the night. Two innings later, rookie Angel Genao extended the advantage with a two-run blast of his own before Angel Martínez added another two-run homer in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
The win could prove significant beyond a single night in the standings.
Entering the series, Toronto trailed Cleveland by just 1½ games for the American League's third and final wild-card berth. By taking the opener, the Guardians not only improved to 70-68 but also widened the gap over one of the teams directly chasing them with just over three weeks remaining in the regular season.
For one night, at least, Cleveland played exactly the kind of baseball that wins in September: dominant starting pitching, timely power, clean bullpen work, and a victory over a direct postseason competitor.
What's Next: The Guardians continue their three-game series against the Blue Jays on Wednesday night at Progressive Field. Cleveland is scheduled to send Joey Cantillo to the mound, while Toronto is expected to counter with Dylan Cease as the Guardians look to secure the series victory.
