WASHINGTON — FC Cincinnati holds a 1-0 halftime lead over D.C. United on Saturday night at Audi Field, thanks to an impressive goal from Evander in the 35th minute.
The Brazilian midfielder broke the scoreless tie with a right-footed shot from outside the penalty area, sending the ball into the upper-left corner. Pavel Bucha provided the assist, with Tom Barlow also contributing to the buildup.
Cincinnati entered Saturday looking for its second victory over D.C. United in four days after winning Wednesday's meeting, 2-1, at TQL Stadium. Another victory would provide three valuable points in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
The Orange and Blue created several opportunities before taking the lead. Bryan Ramírez missed from outside the box in the eighth minute, while shots from Evander, Kévin Denkey, and Bucha were blocked by D.C. defenders.
D.C. United also threatened in the first half, forcing goalkeeper Roman Celentano to make saves on a Jackson Hopkins header in the 26th minute and a long-range attempt from Brandon Servania in the 39th. Teenage Hadebe blocked another Servania shot in the 42nd minute to help Cincinnati preserve its advantage heading into halftime.
Cincinnati will need to remain disciplined in the second half, particularly with Obinna Nwobodo and Barlow both carrying yellow cards.
The Orange and Blue entered the match with just two road victories this season, making Saturday's performance especially important. After struggling with defensive consistency throughout the year, Cincinnati has an opportunity to earn a valuable road win and strengthen its playoff position.
