CLEVELAND — Harold Fannin Jr. made an immediate impression during his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns, catching 72 passes for 731 yards and six touchdowns. Now in his second year, the former Bowling Green standout continues to establish himself as an important part of the team's offense.
Through six games, Fannin has recorded 19 receptions for 166 yards and three touchdowns. He was particularly effective during Cleveland's three-game winning streak earlier this season, catching five passes for 54 yards against Tampa Bay before recording seven receptions for 51 yards and two touchdowns against Carolina. He added another touchdown in the Browns' victory over Pittsburgh.
Those performances reinforced what Cleveland saw from Fannin during his rookie season. His combination of size, reliable hands, and ability to gain yards after the catch gives Deshaun Watson another option in the passing game, particularly on shorter throws and in the red zone.
An Important Part of Cleveland's Offense
Fannin's production has slowed over the past two games, with one reception for four yards against the Jets and another for nine yards in Sunday's 13-10 victory over Baltimore. However, his recent numbers also reflect an offense that has struggled to sustain drives and find consistency through the air.
Head coach Todd Monken and his staff have several young players to work with as Cleveland continues developing its offense. Fannin is among those who have already demonstrated an ability to contribute, particularly when the Browns are able to sustain drives and create opportunities in the passing game.
The 22-year-old tight end has shown he can contribute in multiple situations. His three receiving touchdowns lead Cleveland's tight ends, and his performances against Carolina and Pittsburgh demonstrated how valuable he can be near the goal line.
Another Opportunity Against Tennessee
The Browns enter Sunday's matchup against the Tennessee Titans at 4-2, having won four of their last five games. While Cleveland's defense has played an important role in that success, continued development from players such as Fannin could help the offense become more consistent.
With Watson working alongside young targets including Fannin, KC Concepcion, and Denzel Boston, the Browns have several players capable of becoming important pieces of their offense. Finding ways to get them involved consistently will be part of Cleveland's challenge as the season progresses.
Fannin has already established himself as a dependable contributor in his first two NFL seasons. As the Browns continue building their offense under Monken, the Ohio native figures to remain an important part of their plans.
